The NFL is back. Week 1 went as expected. Many underdogs went into the window (60%) and only two failed to cash as money line winners. The number of upsets in Week 1 is not a surprise to bettors and sportsbooks. We know upsets happen, but that's only half the battle. But that is only half the battle. Pinpointing the favorites that are about to fall flat on their faces is where the real payoff lies.
The Seahawks' big loss was not predictable, especially after the Rams put the Cooper Cup on IR. On the other hand, I thought the 49ers were weak enough to force the Steelers into a 6-point teaser, but they pulled off their most lopsided win of the week. There were many victory lapses, but there were also some major mistakes to ensure that the clown mask gifs and emojis made it back to the recently used section of my phone.
Whether Sunday was a betting success or a bunch of bad beats, Monday night presents an opportunity to end the week with a win. The New York Jets will host the Buffalo Bills on "Monday Night Football." After waiting patiently through the summer and watching the "Hard Knocks" interact with their new teammates, we finally get to see Aaron Rodgers play football as a New York Jet.
The game is meaningful for both teams, who are expected to battle throughout the season in the competitive AFC East. The Patriots' and Dolphins' records strongly support the idea of the strongest division in football; the three-time AFC East champion Patriots are currently a small road favorite at BetMGM. They are 4-1 favorites in Week 1, with only the Bengals coming up short. The Cowboys, Eagles, Jaguars, and 49ers have rewarded bettors who are not afraid to choke. I'm going with the side and the total, so we'll take a closer look Monday night to see where the value lies.
